Dr. Reed Richards is a scientist and inventor, better known as Mr. Fantastic, who has been considered the smartest man on Earth. He is a Polymath, with the mastery of all sciences including electrical, mechanical, aerospace engineering, electronics, chemistry, physics, biology, and more.
Richards was exposed to high levels of cosmic radiation along with his best friend Ben Grimm, then girlfriend Sue Storm and her young brother Johnny Storm, during a trip to space in the stolen rocket, the Marvel — 1.
The radiation mutated him and his friends, allowing him to stretch, inflate and mold his body and limbs at will. Together they became The Fantastic Four, a team of adventurers who explored space, time, and alternate dimensions and saved the world along the way from science-based threats.
In the late 1950s, the comic book industry was struggling. Superheroes had lost some of their luster, and publishers were searching for ways to reinvigorate their stories. Inspired by the success of rival DC Comics’ Justice League of America, Marvel’s publisher Martin Goodman tasked Stan Lee with creating a new superhero team. Lee, contemplating leaving the industry, decided to try something bold: a team of heroes who were as flawed and human as they were superpowered.
The result was The Fantastic Four, a team of adventurers transformed by cosmic radiation during a space mission. Each member gained extraordinary powers:
- Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic): A brilliant scientist who can stretch his body into incredible shapes.
- Sue Storm (Invisible Woman): Reed’s fiancée (later wife), who can turn invisible and project powerful force fields.
- Johnny Storm (Human Torch): Sue’s hotheaded younger brother, who can ignite his body in flames and fly.
- Ben Grimm (The Thing): Reed’s best friend, transformed into a rock-like creature with immense strength but a gruff exterior.
Unlike many superhero teams, The Fantastic Four were a family first and foremost. Their relationships—complete with arguments, reconciliations, and shared triumphs—made them relatable to readers.
