35 Most Powerful Symbiotes in the Marvel Universe

35 Most Powerful Symbiotes in the Marvel Universe

Marvel’s symbiotes were introduced in 1984 when Spider-Man wore a black costume that enhanced his powers. The original idea for Black Suit Spider-Man came from a fan Randy Schueller, who described the new uniform artist Mike Zeck (comic arts) would draw.

The powers and appearance of Spider-Man’s black suit would be tweaked and incremented by Roger Stern, Tom DeFalco, and Ron Frenz until writer David Michelinie and artist Todd McFarlane (comic works) brought Venom in 1988, introducing symbiotes as one of Marvel’s greatest threats.

A lot has happened since 1988, with dozens of unique symbiotes showing up on the pages of different Marvel comic books. The alien goon’s origin was also explored in-depth, as we learned they came from a plant Klyntar.

More recently, Marvel revealed how the symbiotes were created by a deity called Knull to conquer the universe and fight the light produced by Celestials. With such a complex history, it is no wonder that some symbiotes are stronger than others. That’s why we’ve decided to highlight the 35 symbiotes from weakest to strongest in the Marvel Universe.

For movie fans, symbiotes have popped up beyond just Venom’s appearance in Spider-Man 3 with Topher Grace’s Eddie Brock. Contemporary fans can also look to Tom Hardy’s Venom in the 2 movies Venom and again in Venom: Let There Be Carnage where we saw Woody Harrelson take on the role of Cletus Kasaday.

Due to the Multiverse trouble that we saw in Spider-Man: No Way Home we’ve seen that even though Hardy’s Venom was not involved in a fight, he did manage to leave a bit of Venom behind, so more symbiotes could be seen in the future MCU movies.

35. The Poisons (Symbiotes) (Earth 17952)

The Poisons Symbiotes

The Poisons are a species of crystalline extraterrestrials spawned by the Poison Queen, originating on Earth -17952, The Poisons spent an unknown amount of time as prey for larger, stronger creatures before discovering that they could assimilate Symbiotes and their hosts to become more powerful.

While hunting the Venom Symbiote, they were discovered by the incarnation of Doctor Strange, who bonded to the symbiote and proceeded to recruit an army of Venomized superheroes, anti-heroes, and supervillains from across the Multiverse to stop the Poisons.

In their hostless state, the Poisons are capable of physically disguising themselves as their targets loved ones, or innocent bystanders in order to catch them off-guard. If an unbound Poison comes into physical contact with a symbiote that has bonded to the host, it will form a permanent bond with the symbiote, consuming that host’s body to catalyze the process.

After bonding with the host, the Poisons will assimilate the process of their memories, powers, and abilities, and the mind of the symbiote will then be silenced so the Poison can take full control. Poisons are also capable of some inter-dimensional travel, presumably through Doctor Doom or the other consumed magic users.

34. Kron Stone (Symbiote) (Earth 928)

Kron Stone Symbiote

Kron Stone is the older half-brother of Miguel O’Hara. Kron has always been a bully and takes enjoyment in other people’s pain. The relationship between the two is so conflicted that Miguel tries to kill his brother.

In his Introduction, Stone gave the orders to have Jake Gallow’s family killed. Gallows found Stone fatally wounded him with a knife and dumped his body into his body into the sewer. Following the altercation Kron lay down dying in the sewer, his body brushed up against a black ball.

The ball then bonded with him and formed a new venom. The Symbiote was described as having mutated over the years, and displayed new abilities in this timeline, including acidic blood and saliva. With this new power, Stone was able to torture Miguel who he later was able to discover was his half-brother, by hurting those close to him, going so far as to kill Miguel’s former love, Dana.

The future Spider-Man and Venom fought, and Spider-Man was the victor. After the fight, he had to town turn on sonics throughout the city speakers, to neutralize Venom. Then they brought him back to the lab for sturdy. It was revealed that the symbiote bonded with Kron on a molecular level, giving Kron an amorphous physiology that allowed his body to take on the properties of the symbiote itself.

33. Extremis/ Extrembiotes (Symbiotes) (Earth 616)

Armor Symbiotes

Army of Symbiote Dragons bought by the Symbiote God Knull during his invasion of Earth, this symbiote was targeted by Iron Man when the Armored Avenger was attempting to collect a symbiote to save the life of Eddie Brock, who had been nearly fatally injured by Knull after being stripped of the Venom Symbiote.

Using a dose of the techno-organic virus Extremis, Iron Man attempted to rewrite the symbiote dragon DNA to serve its connection to Knull’s Hive. In the process of subduing the symbiote, the creature infused himself with Iron Man’s Armor.

Iron Man then attempts to Eddie Brock to a portion of the Symbiote, but the gambit fails since the symbiote remains connected to the God of Symbiotes, and Brock dies.

Eddie Brock’s Dylan Black was able to sever the symbiote connection with a hive mind granting Iron Man full control over it. When Knull was wounded by Thor, and ordered the symbiote-possessed Celestials to raze Manhattan, Iron Man used his symbiote to hijack control over it. Stark returned to the version of his armor without a symbiote due to the Symbiote god’s defeat and placed the Extremis augmented symbiote armor which he named Extremebiote.

The Extremebiote possessed immense power like other Symbiote dragons. Following its infusion with the Extremis virus and merging it with an Iron Man Suit Mark 70, the Extremebiote also possessed new powers-

  • The Extremebiote is capable of manifesting tendrils from its biomass, using them to attack prey.
  • The Extremebiote also gained the ability to project repulsor blasts capable of cleansing knull’s mind manipulation
  • Iron Man was able to use the Extremebiote to Knull’s symbiotic possession of a Celestial
  • The Extremebiote was capable of returning to its draconic form at its host command.

32. Endo-Sym (Endo-Symbiote) /Extremis 3.0

Extremis 3.0

The Endo-Sym (Endo Symbiote)Armor is a fully liquid smart metal that hardens instantly when it is connected to its user’s body. Just like another suit of Tony Stark Model Number 37, this suit is based on symbiote biology, so it doesn’t rely on tech for the initial bonding process with its user is completely supernatural.

The supernatural bonding with the suit allows its users to control it remotely, and call for it with no need for electronics. Tony Stark has stated the suit can ‘feel’ (referred to as alive). This connection extends to the point of forming fully into a humanoid form that has similarities to that of a symbiote suit even when not bonded to someone, to punch through barriers in an attempt to get its owner at his metaphysical command, but it does not have the intelligence of its own, and it’s only connected through a psionic link.

  • The suit can be sent out to connect with another user other than Tony Stark, through the psionic link or vocal command, to either protect them or restrict them based on Tony’s desire, but will not be able to command or use the suit.
  • Extremis 3.0 (Endo-Symbiote armor) repulsors are white-blue in color, but when he is getting ready to attack someone, they switch colors for an air of menace. Due to his deep-rooted connection to the armor biologically, his own eye sometimes lights up red or blue in addition to lights on the armor itself.
  • These repulsors are so powerful that they can even bypass the ability of people such as Havok to absorb energy. There is an incorporated Taser in the arms that can be used for substantial electrical impulses on command instead of short bursts.
  • The armor can also absorb electromagnetic energy once it finds the correct frequency of said energy. However, through living beings electromagnetic energy such as Spectrum can be absorbed, and they can break free of the armor, causing the armor to temporarily dissolve in a select position before reassembling. The armor is also capable of withstanding the lightning called forth by Storm, with minimal or no damage.
  • The armor also has its more forming compound added to increase its size, granting the suit a Hulk-like physique.

31. Scorn Symbiote (Earth 616)

Scorn Symbiotes

When the Carnage Symbiote was being taken back to Earth from its orbit after the prison break in the RAFT, Michael Hall, used the Symbiote to create hybrid prostheses consisting of both technology and the symbiote itself. Eventually, the Carnage Symbiote managed to escape from its containment cell and bonded to Tanis Nieves, leaving its offspring within her prosthesis after it used her to rescue Cletus Kasady. This new symbiote was later taken from Niever by Shriek.

When Tanis Nieves was taken hostage by Shriek, she managed to get near the new symbiote and become one with it, creating Scorn. Scorn forced Shriek to use her sonic attack to weaken Carnage. Later, she joined the Mercury Team to stop from taking over Doverton, Colorado.

The Scorn Symbiote was presumably affected by the awakening of the dark elder god Knull, who had created the symbiotes and wanted to use them to conquer the universe and purge it to life. The Symbiote and its host became the leader of an apocalyptic cult worshipping Knull and dedicated to freeing him from his prison, and to this end retrieved the corpse of Cletus Kasady – whom the cult viewed as Knull’s prophet, and stole a sample Grendel Symbiote– which Knull had indwelled from the makers.

30. Mayhem Symbiote (April Parker) (earth-982)

Mayhem Symbiote

On Earth – 982, when May Parker was born, Norman Osborn secretly cloned her. Then he kept one of the pair and placed her in a Stasis chamber for years. While in the Stasis chamber, Norman Osborn altered her genetic code to make her the very first human/symbiote hybrid clone.

This Symbiote was never sentient so the girl never had to deal with a second consciousness in her mind. This new hybrid was all part of Osborn’s master plan to be reborn into an immortal Goblin Creature. After Norman Osborn’s death, a group of Green Goblin followers updated the symbiote’s DNA so she would be the same as May Parker in appearance. A few years later, Normie Osborn ‘found the stasis chamber in Osborn Chemical.

Mayhem possesses all of May Parker’s abilities including superhuman strength (lifting 25 tons), speed agility, and durability. She also has a Spider-Sense that warns her of impending danger. She can cling to surfaces and objects via static electricity and use this power to cause others to cling to surfaces too: she can also use this ability to repel objects as if they are projectiles.

Her symbiote nature renders her body entirely malleable, and she can form simple weapons with her hands extending tendrils, from her body, or elongate her limbs and torso, she can also alter her appearance and produce organic webbing.

29. Lasher (Earth 616)

Lasher

The sinister Life Foundation, an organization that was preparing for the Mutually Assured Destruction fallout of the Cold War, or in the event of chaos, sought to provide a comfortable life for their wealthy clients after the impending holocaust. We need a superhuman police force to protect this utopian future, the Foundation’s leader Carlton Drake saw potential candidates for these future guardians in the unborn offspring of Venom and subsequently ordered him to be captured.

Once the foundation successfully captured Venom, who was in San Francisco at the time, they brought him to their lab, in the Mojave Desert of California. While there they forcibly extracted five seeds, from Venom and hatched them. As it was still too young to control a host, later it merged with Ramon Hernandez, a security officer of Life Foundation. Together it and Hernandez along with the other 4 would become the Foundation guardian symbiotes.

When Spider-Man followed his sister Agent Four, Donna Diego, he and the other guardian’s symbiotes all attacked the wall-crawler. But before they could kill him. Eddie, who had gotten free once they removed the Venom Symbiote. and managed to defeat the guardian symbiotes alongside Spider-Man using a metabolic accelerator, which rapidly sped up the aging process of the symbiotes and eventually turned them to dust when Venom cranked up their power, seemingly killed them. Lasher’s host, as well as other hosts of symbiotes also appeared to die in that explosion.

The Lasher Symbiote covers its host with greenish biomass and enhances its natural abilities to a superhuman level (including superhuman strength, durability, stamina, and smell). Possibly due to Earth’s environment, it has the ability to manipulate its biomass in a variety of ways. When bonded to a host, it manifests 6 tentacles on its upper back, with 3 on each side. Other powers include Regeneration, wallcrawling, Spider-Sense, immunity to Spider-Man’s Spider-sense, and organic webbing.

Phage host, as well as other hosts of symbiotes also appeared to die in that explosion.

The Phage Symbiote covers itself with orange or yellow biomass and increases its natural abilities to a superhuman level (including strength, durability, stamina senses.) Other powers include Regeneration, wallcrawling, Spider-sense, immunity to spider-man spider-sense, organic webbing, camouflage,

Phage symbiote’s primary method of attack was to form his symbiotic costume into long serrated blades and slash or stab his opponents. This ability was also possessed by his brother Carnage.

27. Agony

Marvel’s deadly symbiote are always a deadly batch to tangle with. With the start of the Extreme Carnage event, several of Venom’s offspring will be returning, including Phage, Riot, Lasher, Scream, and Agony. Agony was one of the five Life Foundation Symbiotes that were forcefully spawned from the Venom symbiote.

Agony was born from Venom in 1993’s Venom: Lethal Protector miniseries. Eddie Brock – the host of Venom – is separated from his symbiote other by the Life Foundation in order to create a group of symbiotes. These symbiotes are bonded to volunteers of the organization as a means of developing a tougher security team. Agony is purple or pink in coloration and has some special abilities that the other Life Foundation symbiotes do not, including acidic saliva used as a projectile and the ability to absorb and reproduce chemicals orally.

  • Leslie Gesneria was a mercenary hired by the Life Foundation. In order to fulfill her role as a superhuman officer for the corporation’s future utopia, she was granted one of the 5 symbiotes forcibly spawned from the Venom symbiote. Leslie was later killed by fellow former Life Foundation agent and host to one of Agony’s siblings Scream, Donna Diego.
  • Gemma Shin was Senator Peter Krane’s deputy director of communications, she witnessed the Knull symbiote invasion where at one point she bonded to the Agony symbiote, who has now taken on the alias Agony.

26. Mania

Mania Symbiote

The Symbiote that would later be known as Mania (alias Maniac) Symbiote was a clone of the Venom Symbiote created by the Ararat Corporation from a piece of its tongue, intended to facilitate Bob’s goal of exterminating all life on Earth.

Eventually after bonding with Patricia Robertson, who was able to control it with the help of a cybernetic collar and intended to use it to kill the original Venom, Eddie Brock. Thanks to Bob’s actions, the clone remerged with the original symbiote, making Venom more powerful than ever. However, Bob’s plan never came to pass, and eventually, former soldier Flash Thompson bonded with the Venom Symbiote to become Agent Venom.

While Flash was acting as a substitute gym teacher in Philadelphia, Jack O’Lantern tried to kill one of his students. Andi Benton, with poison gas. However, Flash accidentally bonded the symbiote clone to Andi in order to protect her, unaware of its nature, and later learned that the Venom had passed his demonic Hell-Mark onto its clone.

Dubbing herself Mania, Andi continued fighting crime but was eventually possessed by the Hell-Mark when Flash went to live his own adventures with Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite the fact, the Flash eventually returned to help her recover, and alongside his allies brought a elixir that served as a temporary cure to her condition.

Unfortunately former Army Ranger Lee Price stole the Mania symbiote from her and dubbed himself as Maniac. Lee started creating his own criminal empire by using offshoots from his symbiote to possess others, but his plans backfired when Flash Thompson became Anti-Venom.

Arrested Lee Price, was targeted by Carnage who was collecting remnants of other symbiotes called codices in other hosts to awake the God of Symbiote Knull. Impersonating Eddie Brock, Carnage killed him to take the Maniac symbiote and absorb it into his composite symbiote. Eddie eventually killed Cletus, the Venom abosrbed his and Mania symbiotes along with codices released Knull.

As a clone of the Venom symbiote, Mania possesses the same powers of its genetic template, such as:

25. Dr. Karl Malus

Dr. Karl Malus Symbiote

Dr. Karl Malus was fascinated by the subject of superhuman powers since the first time he read a newspaper account of the superhero team Fantastic Four. Upon graduating with a degree in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles, he applied in various institutions for a grant to study supernormal capacities in depth.

Dr. Karl was unable to get any funding through legal means, Malus contacted certain wealthy investors active in the Los Angeles underworld. They set him up with a labratory facility he immodestly called the Institute for Supranormality Research, despite the fact that he compromised its entire staff.

The underworld provided him with human test subjects to experiment upon, usually individuals with mob sought to liquidate. Malus hoped eventually to find an individual who already had superhuman powers he could study. In the course of his research, Malus came up with a number of special toxins and other chemical based weaponry which he sold to such Los Angeles criminals to the Enforcer.

The Raze Symbiote was spawned by Carnage and bonded with former FBI special agent Claire Dixon as a part of a ritual involving the Darkhold.

The symbiote appeared to have died when Jubulile Van Scotter absorbed it into her own symbiote to empower herself and fight Carnage and the eldritch god Chthon – who had been summoned to Earth by Carnage

Once her allies used the Darkhold for enhancing Jubulile’s powers with the psychic energies of the world, she banished Chthon back to K’lay but the symbiotes Jubulile had absorbed apparently dissolved.

Payback Symbiote

Payback has an interesting symbiote story to tell, particularly because her symbiote isn’t of the same Klyntar species as Venom, Carnage, and their offspring. Believed to be a cousin species to the Klyntar, this symbiote was energy-based in nature, rather than organic, granting its host Mavis Trent some nifty abilities.

Besides the complimentary superhuman strength, speed, durability, and agility, Payback could fly and manipulate electromagnetic energy in the form of microwaves and electromagnetic pulses. When doused in water, the Payback symbiote would produce an electrical discharge, as well.

Scorn Symbiote Prime Marvel Universe

Tanis Nieves was a psychiatrist assigned to Shriek before briefly wearing the Carnage Symbiote. It brought her to Cletus Kasady and abandoned her to return to him.

It was later discovered that she was carrying Carnage’s child, which was growing on her prosthetic arm. Horrified by its hunger, she cut off her arm and Shriek claimed it for her own. With the new symbiote bonded to her arm, Shriek dragged her out into the streets where Carnage was fighting Spider-Man and Iron Man.

She scared the symbiote so it abandoned her to return to Tanis. She accepted the bond and became Scorn. Pulling her by the hair, Scorn forced Shriek to use her sonic scream on Carnage. This put her into a coma and gave Spider-Man and Iron Man the chance they needed to defeat Carnage. However, he was still able to escape.

Mister E is the alias of primordial proto-symbiote created by Knull (God of Symbiotes), as one of his early experiments at manipulating living species.

While travelling to Earth, Mister E developed attributes of godhood and took a NASA scientist named Louis Tuttle as its host, infecting the staff at Cape Canaveral with off shoots in order to turn them into shadows slaves. Mister E had its shadow slaves modify a space shuttle to emit negatron particles, intending to transform the sun into a black star – thus killing all the life on Earth save those and convert them into shadow slaves and use them to conquer the universe.

However, Mister E was opposed by Steven Coffin, who had become the host of Uni-power and transformed into Captain Universe. Wreathing the space shuttle in darkness, Mister E flew the ship towards the sun: while battling Capatin Universe breeched the shuttles hull and caused it ot fly into the sun.

Venomsaurus Rex

The Venom Symbiotes history presumably mirrors that of its Prime Universe counterpart at least up until it was brought to Earth by Spider-Man.

Left without a host, symbiote disguised itself as a pool of water and bonded with a surviving member of the Madrow Gang, using his powers to create an army of replicants and hunt down Hawkeye. They confronted Hawkeye and Josie Bar’s but Hawkeye somehow escaped and fled to Bishop’s Refuge. Hawkeye tricked the army into shrinking and chased him through a nearby canon which had become overun Tyrannosaurus Rexes imported from Savage Land where one of them was eaten by T-Rex.

The symbiote bonded with T-Rex and later followed Logan and Hawkeye through the Black Hills of South Dakota. It attacked them only to be seemingly killed by one word coming out of Black Bolt.

19. Wraith

Wraith was born to the Kree Scientist Sim-Del and an unnamed mother, the Kree child Zak-Del led a tragic childhood. After his father invented a powerful power source that could ‘light the entire galaxy’, his work was banned by the merchant class of the ‘Kree Empire’. Not wishing to be further deterred in his research, Sim-Del took his family to Marxhotz in the Bennazar Rift, where he used his power source to turn the barren planet, into a paradise for his family.

They lived there for a time until a Kree Death squad, led by an unidentified man bearing a signet ring, slaughtered Sim-Del and his wife. Meanwhile, their son Zak-Del was taken by the robot servant and launched into space abroad a protective capsule in order to escape the death squads.

The “estrangement” from their souls drove the Nameless mad, causing them to inflict pain upon themselves. These acts become the only things that allow them to remember who they were. The boy that would become the Wraith held onto the murder of his parents, using it to motivate him beyond merely being another one of the Nameless. Eventually, he found the leader of the Nameless and killed him, taking his Exolon poncho, weapons, and ship for himself and leaving the Exoteric Latitude.
