Heroes powers, weapons, abilities all about them only becomes interesting when they have a worthy villain, and has been a notable adversary group for the better part of a century in the MCU. While Nick Fury’s Iron Man cameo laid the groundwork for S.H.I.E.L.D.(Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) and the Avengers, Hydra is a sinister mirror with a mysterious and powerful leader to match. Though the organization got its proper start in World War II, it proved to be a match for its mythological namesake by continuing to find a way to survive.
While Hydra may technically still be active in the MCU timeline, their presence and influence have significantly waned. As such, as it’s possible to look at their decades long-run as a largely complete picture. From the disfigured Red Skull in MCU Phase 1 to sleeper cells years later, we will try to list major events of Hydra in MCU timeline. And we’ll try to answer that whether Hydra is still alive in MCU, if they are, what will be their future?

Brief History of Hydra
Hydra is an authoritative-subversive paramilitary terrorist organization bent on the world domination. It was founded in ancient times, formerly as a cult dedicated to fanatical worship of Hive, a powerful Inhuman that was exiled to the planet Maveth by ancient Inhumans. Ever since his banishment, the cult has been determined to bring him back to the Earth to commence a planetary takeover.
For centuries, this organization evolved taking many forms, with its most recent incarnation coming into existence shortly after the rise of Nazi’s in Germany under the leadership of Johann Schmidt as the scientific branch of the Nazi Schutztaffel. During this time, the cult looks on the name Hydra, which soon became the organization’s most colloquial label. During World War II, Schmidt separated Hydra from Nazi Germany to start his own conquest of the world, and it was during or before this time when HYDRA seemingly abandoned the cult’s original beliefs. Converting from occultism to Draconian anti-freedom principles, HYDRA became an organization with a hell-bent nature that is dedicated towards his newfound political disparities.
After Red Skull was defeated by Captain America in 1945 and the subsequent disappearance of Johann Schmidt. This organization was secretly rebuilt inside S.H.I.E.L.D. by Schmidt’s top scientist Arnim Zolo, who was recruited into the agency during Operation Paperclip and also formed an alliance with Soviet Union. Zolo’s body died in 1972, Hydra was well established, and Zolo’s mind continued to live in a computer.
In the following decades, Hydra orchestrated crises and planted roots worldwide, establishing a clandestine network of operatives engaged in political engineering and scientific research. HYDRA’S endgame was the overthrow of world governments to establish a fascist, totalitarian global state; thus preemptively eliminating potential threats to their new order. Members who still followed the orginal beliefs of Hydra took part in this as a means of smoothly and immediatley transferring control of a groomed Earth to their Inhuman Idol. New members to join the organization were acquired from disenfranchised members of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as children born to already established members. These children were indoctrained from childhood in facilities run by H.Y.D.R.A. and into different roles by the leadership.
