Deadpool and Wolverine (2024) Review: What are Good and Bad Aspects of the Movie, Is it really going to save MCU?

Deadpool and Wolverine (aka Marvel Jesus) is here to shake the things up by joining the MCU and making things quite weird. After the great success of Avengers Endgame, Marvel Cinematic Universe has been experiencing “a bit of a low point” as the all the major movies of Phase 4 (excluding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Black Panther Wakanda Forever) failed badly. Deadpool and Wolverine is just an R-rated version of a bog-standard modern Marvel Flick: It’s pretty funny, the story is centered around the same CGI plot device, the third installment of the Deadpool franchise there are no meaningful plot connections linked to the MCU.

SPOILER WARNING

From the above short summarized review, don’t think that Deadpool and Wolverine is just awful. It’s just got some good action sequences, like — opening killing scenes (with background music N Sync’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’), fight sequence between Deadpool and Wolverine. Just like Deadpool 2, Deadpool and Wolverine is strangely filled with emotional scenes that don’t track at all with silly, fourth-wall breaking, and now what we get is an overly complicated MCU story, that requires way more explanation.

Deadpool and Wolverine Plot

Wade Kidnapped by TVA Agents
Wade Kidnapped by TVA Agents

Deadpool and Wolverine is basically Deadpool’s version of the TVA from Loki Series. Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool) is being taken by the TVA agents to Mr. Paradox. Paradox tells Wade that his universe Earth 10005 is dying because their universe lost their’ anchor-being’ as we all know, Wolverine died in Logan (2017). Wolverine is being used as meta humor as Logan, and is by far the most popular X-Men. It also tells that after Logan died how the franchise was not able to survive without Hugh Jackman, and the MCU taking over the Fox Studios.

Paradox offers Wade Wilson to join the Avengers if he’ll help accelerate the destruction of his home universe. In the movie, there’s actually no discussion of what Paradox actually wanted to do, though. Deadpool rejects the offer and takes Paradox tempad to take his own path by entering different universes on different timelines to find a new Wolverine. During his quest to find the new Wolverine he meets various different variants of – Earth 10005 Wolverine Corpse (Skeleton), Short King Wolverine, Patch, Weapon Omega, Wolverine vs Hulk, Crucified Wolverine, Cavilirine (Henry Cavil as Wolverine), Old Man Logan, Classic X-Men Suit Wolverine.

Once Deadpool finds the perfect Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), he takes him back to the TVA, to talk to Paradox to make this captured Wolverine as Anchor Being of Earth 10005. Paradox tells Deadpool that’s not how things work, and Paradox suddenly prunes Deadpool and Wolverine. They both are being pruned to the void, (which was being shown in Loki Season 1), void is basically the place where all the source of Nexus Event, or unusable things which are not essential in the timeline is being sent to void.

Deadpool and Wolverine meet Johnny Storm (aka Human Torch) and a lot of D tier Mutants like Sabretooth, Pyro, Toad, and Charles Xavier evil sister Cassendra Nova, who was supposed to have died during her childbirth. Cassendra Nova is actually a super cool mutant, specifically when he uses her telepathic manipulation powers by sticking her fingers inside people’s head.

Our Review

Although it’s all meaningless, though Deadpool and Wolverine story doesn’t work very well, which is not itself necessarily a problem, since this is supposed to be a comedy film and plot naturally comes second to. This is an MCU movie, so as we all know that, this means there’s an excessive amount of time spent explaining stuff to set up a third act where that stuff doesn’t actually matter much.

Fortunately, it doesn’t work from scene to scene — basically any time for Deadpool and Wolverine as the movie switches to its action sequence mode, that where things get interesting. The Intro scene of Deadpool fighting the TVA agents and the dance sequence of Deadpool fighting and dancing with background music’ Bye Bye Bye by NSYNC’ makes it one of the best intro scene.

Some scenes you may find glossy but still it looks good, the movies’ production is the same Marvel standard assembly line stuff. Everything by the book, camera angles, standard editing pace, standard CGI environments.

But that’s what you will get when you hire a filmmaker like Shawn Levy, who is an exceptionally talented at making movies that have earned an audience rating of 6 / 10 from IMDB users. The copious cameos help a little bit to keep the excitement in the movie like Chris Evans as Human, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade and many more. But all the cameos are being overshadowed by the Cassandra Nova as the big bad villain (in simple words, you can see her as an R-Rated version of Evil Wanda).

Although Cassandra Nova is a creepy blast in the role, even though her character doesn’t track at all in the storyline. Unfortunately, even after having such great actors and their characters making such great cameos add too much. In the movie there are lots of random characters from Fox Marvel movies, but not many who matter to either of the title characters, and they contribute to Deadpool and Wolverine ultimate downfall — its complete inability to wrangle it’s done. The film constantly hops between Deadpool making stupid cringe jokes and Wolverine very sincerely pondering every mistake in his universe, like — Death of X-Men, and it’s hard to deal with it.
