Since James Gunn and Peter Safran has announced the DC Universe Chapter 1, there have been plenty of movies and web series releasing in 2024 and beyond. With a wide array of films being in various development stages at the newly established DC studios.
Fundamentally, 2024, represents a new beginning for DC’s on-screen installments, as the stage begins to properly set the start of James Gunn’s DC Universe with Superman: Legacy. Alongside that, of course, is the Matt Reeve’s Batman II and Joker: Folie à deux.
With Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom all released in 2023, the DC movie slate is complete, as is the DCEU movie timeline. For 2024, only Todd Philips Joker: Folie à deux, but from 2025 onwards will see James Gunn and Peter Safran fully take the reins, as Superman: Legacy kick-starts the new DC Universe alongside several projects already announced to revitalize the subsequent shared universe.

1. Joker: Folie à deux (DC Elseworld)
Release Date — October 4,2024
2019’s Joker was one of the biggest success stories, reaching critical acclaim and earning a number of accolades, including 2 Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.
Though initially conceptualized as a standalone feature, a sequel, Joker: Folie à deux was announced to be in development in May 2021, set to release on October 4, 2024. It’s DC’s only release in 2024. Todd Philip’s Joker franchise takes place in DC’s Else worlds, so it will not be affected by the rest of the main DC Universe, which means a completely fresh and separate storyline will be showcased.
Joaquin Phoenix is set to reprise his role of Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. Joker, and Zazie Beetz is also set to return to the film. Alongside Brendan Gleason, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey, Lady Gaga will be playing the role of Harley Quinn, as the set photos are depicting that her portrayal could be an incredibly sinister version of the character.
Joker Folie à deux is set to musical movie, taking the story to a completely different genre to its gritty and dark predecessor, though there’s no doubt the sequel will have the great quality storyline.
2. Superman Legacy (DCU)
Release Date — July 11, 2025
After Waller and Creature Commandos kick-start: James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU on the small screen, the upcoming Superman: Legacy is set to be the DCU’s first feature film. Superman: Legacy will replace Henry Cavil’s Superman from DCEU with David Corenswet, introducing a new Superman for the rebooted DCU.
Crucially, Superman: Legacy will not be retelling Superman’s Origin story. Instead, this movie will focus on how Clark Kent will be balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his Kansas upbringing, already working as a reporter for Daily Planet, and already having met a main character like Lois Lane. This movie is written and directed by James Gunn himself.
Alongside David Corenswet new Superman, Superman: Legacy’s cast will be headed by Rachel Brosnanhan, as Lois Lane. James Gunn has promised all the DC Fan’s that his new Superman would arrive in a world already populated by superheroes and delivered immediately with the news that Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho are already confirmed for Superman: Legacy.
3. Matt Reeve’s The Batman Part: II (Elseworld)
Release Date — October 3, 2025
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was intended to kick-start a new trilogy of standalone projects, focused on The Dark Knight, so the confirmation of the sequel was inevitable. The Batman II is set to release on October 3, 2025, and it will be an Elseworld project, continuing the storyline of 2022’s original and upcoming Penguin series.
Robert Pattinson will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne (aka Batman), though still much less is known about the film. But recently, a speculation was made that The Batman: II could adapt Batman: No Man’s Land storyline, which sees Gotham City becoming a Battlefield in the wake of a catastrophic earthquake.
4. Watchmen (Animated Movie)
Release Date — 2024
Despite 2 adaptations also existing, Warner Bros are once more adapting Alan Moore’s seminal comic book event, with an animated Watchmen movie coming in 2024. The movie will adapt the original 12 issues between September 1986 and October 1987, and follows Zack Snyder’s movie in 2009 and HBO’s short-lived 2019 adaptation. It will be releasing directly to streaming platform in 2024.
